Tottenham v Borussia Dortmund Match Preview
Tottenham’s season has been a strange one so far. Despite no incoming transfers being confirmed for over 12 months, the club’s long-awaited move into their new stadium being repeatedly delayed and rumours constantly circulating regarding the future of manager Mauricio Pochettino, the Lilywhites still find themselves in third place in the Premier League table, just five points behind leaders Liverpool and also through to the knock-out stages of the Champions League.
And more problems have been thrown Pochettino’s way in recent weeks after his squad has been depleted by injuries to key players and defeats to fellow Londoners Chelsea and Crystal Palace saw them crash out of both domestic cup competitions within a matter of days. After returning to league action with three consecutive Wembley wins, can the Lilywhites now pick up an important first-leg win in this Champions League clash at 11/8 with Black Type? Borussia Dortmund are enjoying a terrific first season under the management of Lucien Favre. Die Borussen have struggled to compete with Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga table since the departure of popular boss Jurgen Klopp, now of Liverpool, a few years ago. This term however, Favre and his side currently sit five points clear of FC Hollywood in their chase for the German title with only 13 league games remaining in the campaign. In the Champions League BVB managed to secure top spot in a potentially tricky group that involved Monaco, Atletico Madrid and Club Brugge, but they will be very wary of this Tottenham Hotspur side having lost to them twice in last year’s group stages. Recent form has been a little sketchy too – they’ve drawn their last two Bundesliga matches against Frankfurt and Hoffenheim and were dumped out of the DFB Pokal by Hertha Berlin in between those tied fixtures, so they’re out at 28/13 for the win here with Unibet. We’re backing the goals in this game. Both of these sides prefer to play on the front foot. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in six of Tottenham’s last eight games and even without Harry Kane and Dele Alli you would expect the likes of Son Heung Min and Christian Eriksen to pose a threat. Dortmund have shipped six goals and scored six goals across their last two games, with Paco Alcacer and Marco Reus forming a deadly duo at the spearhead of their attack. Over 2.5 goals is available at 8/11 with William Hill. Son Heung Min returned to the Tottenham team from the Asia Cup just a couple of weeks ago and he has scored in all three of his appearances since in the Lilywhites’ wins over Newcastle United, Watford and Leicester City. That trio of strikes takes the South Korean’s total for the season to 14 in all competitions and we’re backing him for a 15th here at 7/5 with Ladbrokes.
