Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton Match Preview
These clubs’ winter breaks will start a few days later than intended because of this FA Cup replay – and to compound matters, we think extra time could be needed to settle the tie.
Call it Sod’s law or whatever you will, but both Tottenham and Southampton are among the 12 Premier League teams not in action at the weekend. Thus their two-week hiatus from league action has been slashed by around 25% as they need to establish which of them will go through to the FA Cup fifth round.
It’s a far from ideal situation for both managers, neither of whom welcome this game and would rather the tie had been settled at St Mary’s Stadium on January 25 when Heung-min Son gave Spurs the lead only for Sofiane Boufal to score a late equaliser for Southampton.
But Jose Mourinho nor Ralph Hasenhuttl has publicly – at the time of writing, at least – gone down the same route as Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp of saying he will rest all of his first-team squad in the replay and send out a team of kids instead.
Tottenham will be buzzing after their 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday and they have won their last four home matches against Southampton.
However, Saints’ 4-0 weekend defeat at Liverpool was a very harsh reflection of how they played and as their previous recent away form had been excellent, they may well be capable of taking this tie to an extra half-hour – not that anyone actively involved is likely to want that.
