Tottenham Hotspur vs Red Star Belgrade Match Preview
Tottenham Hotspur are struggling badly and it is hard to overstate just how desperately they need a victory when they host Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.
The Spurs tale of woe reads as follows: three wins in 12 matches this season; out of the Carabao Cup to League Two club Colchester; thrashed 7-2 at home by Bayern Munich in the Champions League; lucky to draw 1-1 at home to the Premier League’s bottom club Watford on Saturday when refereeing/VAR decisions went in their favour.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino is under huge pressure and even though his club signed players for the first time in three transfer windows this summer, they appear to be experiencing a lengthy hangover from reaching the Champions League Final last season.
But after suffering the biggest ever home defeat by any English team in Europe three weeks ago, Spurs still have a good chance here to boost their prospects of clawing their way back into a position to qualify for the knockout stage of the continent’s elite club competition.
Red Star Belgrade, who were European champions in 1991, made it through to the group stage for the first time in 27 years last term but although they are strong at home, their recent away record at this level is poor (see stats above).
Crvena Zvezda, as they are also known, are winless in their last nine European games on the road, including qualifiers this season in Lithuania and Finland, and if Spurs cannot beat them in London then the game may be well and truly up for Pochettino.
