Tottenham Hotspur vs Olympiakos Match Preview
Jose Mourinho is back in European combat this week, knowing that if his Tottenham side justify short odds against Olympiakos they will be through to the Champions League knockout stage.
The Special One has a tough act to follow in terms of Spurs’ continental achievements, with his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino sacked less than six months after leading out the team for the Champions League Final.
But among the reasons why Pochettino’s five-year reign ended last week was the 7-2 home drubbing by Bayern Munich in early October, while squandering a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 away to Olympiakos was also far from ideal.
Still, Tottenham are in excellent shape to reach the last 16 because this is not a particularly tough group and after putting nine goals without reply past Red Star Belgrade in their mid-point double-header, they need only to beat Olympiakos to advance. Even a draw would be enough this week if Red Star fail to beat Bayern at home.
The comeback against Spurs earned the Greek side their only point of this campaign so far and realistically, for them it will be all about beating Red Star at home two weeks from now to gain a place in the Europa League – that’s if Tuesday’s results go according to form.
After starting his tenure with a 3-2 win at West Ham on Saturday, Mourinho will be keen to build up some early momentum and is backed to make it two victories out of two with a comfortable triumph.
