Tottenham Hotspur vs Middlesbrough Match Preview
Tottenham have gone four matches without a win for the first time since the autumn of 2016 – and manager Jose Mourinho will know victory against Middlesbrough is an absolute must.
Not that Mourinho is under any pressure yet. He faces no immediate danger even though his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino never went more than three games without a victory for the last three years of his Spurs reign before being sacked in mid-November.
But an FA Cup exit at the opening hurdle at home to Championship club Middlesbrough would set alarm bells ringing, despite the selection problems the ‘Special One’ is experiencing, capped, of course, by the injury absence of Harry Kane until the spring.
In the original match at the Riverside Stadium, Boro took the lead through Ashley Fletcher. However, Tottenham were the dominant side and Lucas Moura equalised to force a replay.
Spurs are long odds-on to get the job done in 90 minutes at the second time of asking, but Middlesbrough have improved considerably over the last few weeks for Jonathan Woodgate and won their last two away games 2-0 against Championship promotion hopefuls West Brom and Preston.
It will be far more difficult to do likewise this time though and after going down narrowly against Premier League champions-elect Liverpool at the weekend, Spurs are backed to give themselves a confidence boost here with a comfortable success – which would book a fourth-round trip to their New Year’s Day conquerors Southampton.
