Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool Match Preview
Jose Mourinho has ‘previous’ for bursting Liverpool’s Premier League title bubble – and Manchester City will be pinning their hopes on him doing them another favour on Saturday.
The Special One and his Chelsea team effectively handed the crown to City in 2014 when they won at Anfield. This time, however, the circumstances are very different – it’s now much earlier in the season and the Merseysiders are in a vastly superior position to back then.
Rather than ruining the dream completely, Mourinho’s Tottenham side can only really give Liverpool something of a jolt if they beat them this weekend. A margin of 13 points to Leicester and 14 to Manchester City, plus a game in hand, is of huge comfort to the Reds.
And frankly, there is little recent evidence to suggest Spurs can open up the title race to any extent. Their only victory in the last five games they have played came after they had trailed at home to Brighton at the break, while Harry Kane is sidelined with a hamstring injury.
In contrast, Liverpool march on relentlessly with win after win. Their successful trip to the Club World Cup has done nothing to halt their momentum and manager Jurgen Klopp was able to play the kids and still beat Everton in the FA Cup last weekend.
This is the sort of test Mourinho will relish and he is sure to have a plan, perhaps a largely defensive one. But unlike the events of five years ago, it is hard to see Liverpool being knocked off course by the manager their fans love to hate.
