Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Match Preview
Frank Lampard emerged triumphant from his only previous managerial head-to-head with his former mentor Jose Mourinho – but we are backing the opposite scenario to happen this time.
Lampard, of course, was a key component of Mourinho’s dominant Chelsea team of the mid-2000s and the duo have great respect for each other. However, it was the apprentice who got the better of the master when the Special One’s Manchester United side were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on their own pitch by Lampard’s Derby team last season.
Derby were in the Championship then, but now the former England midfielder is in charge of Chelsea while Mourinho is further north in the capital at Tottenham – and they meet here with their clubs separated by only three Premier League points.
Tottenham are in the better form. They have won five games out of seven since Mourinho’s appointment and goals have been flowing, each match during his tenure having contained three or more.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have lost their way in the Premier League where it’s four defeats out of five for the Blues and their solid top-four position is now under real threat – primarily from Sunday’s opponents.
This is the sort of contest in which it really does look best to go with the current trend of results and it is difficult to see Mourinho being thwarted by the managerial upstart this time.
