Tottenham Hotspur vs Ajax Match Preview
Tottenham Hotspur are in the semi-finals of the premier European competition for only the second time in their history, with the first coming in their first ever season in European football. The Lilywhites may not have won a trophy for over ten years, but they have continued to steadily improve under the guidance of popular manager Mauricio Pochettino and are now just two legs against Ajax away from reaching the final of perhaps the most revered competition in continental club football.
They may have fallen away in the Premier League race and may have won just three of their last nine games in that competition, but their place in next year’s Champions League is starting to look more comfortable following some better form at their new stadium where they have won their first four games in all competitions without conceding a goal (prior to Saturday’s Premier League fixture against West Ham United). Can they earn a first leg lead here like they did versus Manchester City in the last round at odds of 7/5 with Bet365?
Ajax have surprised everyone in the Champions League this year. Although the majority of the footballing world has been well aware of the ability coming through the youth ranks in Amsterdam in recent years and the long and proud history of one of Europe’s most well-supported and historic football clubs, nobody expected them to overcome the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus in the knock-out stages to reach the semi-final this season.
Domestically, de Godenzonen are locked in a pulsating title race with PSV Eindhoven where, as things stand, they sit three points clear of their rivals who do have a game in hand. Unsurprisingly, Erik ten Hag’s men appeared to have taken momentum from those famous wins over Real Madrid and Juventus and will make the trip to North London on the back of four consecutive wins – can they take a lead back to the Netherlands by winning here at 2/1 with PaddyPower?
We’re backing goals in this one. Tottenham have failed to score in only one of their last ten games in all competitions and even without the injured Harry Kane and suspended Son Heung-Min, they possess plenty of attacking talent through the likes of Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura. Ajax meanwhile have racked up an incredible 26 goals in their last eight outings and will be desperate to get an away goal here – can they manage that? Both teams to score is available at 4/6 with William Hill.
That man Eriksen was on the scoresheet in the closing minutes of Tottenham’s hard-fought home win over Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. The Spurs midfielder, who played over 150 times for Ajax as a youngster, will be expected to step up and provide a moment of magic in the absence of both Son and Kane in this game and we’re backing him to do that with his tenth goal of the campaign at 11/4 with Bet365.
