Switzerland vs Republic of Ireland Predictions
Switzerland still have every chance of qualifying for next summer’s European Championships despite some rather patchy form so far leaving them in third place in the table with three games remaining. El Nati will have expected to qualify for the tournament as their record in doing so has been terrific in recent years and they’ve managed to reach the finals of seven of the last eight major international tournaments.
However, with five games on the board they sit in third place in the group with four points to gain on both the Republic of Ireland and Denmark who sit above them in the table at the moment. A 1-0 defeat to Denmark at the weekend really did dent Vladimir Petkovic’s side’s chances of qualification but with three winnable games left they’ll know how important it is to bounce back with three points here at 4/7 with Ladbrokes.
The Republic of Ireland have a real chance of qualifying for the European Championships as things stand after missing out on the World Cup in Russia last summer once again. Having replaced Martin O’Neill, Mick McCarthy has certainly improved results for the Boys in Green and they sit top of their qualifying group on 12 points from six games, but they do still have work to do with this trip to Switzerland and then a home fixture versus Denmark in the next international break.
Under McCarthy, the side have now gone nine games unbeaten both in qualification and in friendlies , but it’s worth noting that they haven’t faced too many difficult opponents in that run and indeed they were held to a disappointing away draw with Georgia on Saturday. A draw here would be enough to keep qualification in their hands heading into their final game but they’ll want all three points at odds of 6/1 with William Hill.
We have to back a low-scoring game here. Under 2.5 goals have been scored in 11 of the Republic of Ireland’s last 12 international matches, and although their opponents Switzerland usually adopt a more attacking approach, three of their last four matches have seen less than three goals scored as well. What’s more, the last five meetings between these sides have all seen under 2.5 goals scored so we’re on the same again here at 4/7 with William Hill.
On paper, this Swiss side should be able to overcome the Republic of Ireland and we suspect the Green Army’s confidence will have been dented by that disappointing draw with Georgia over the weekend. With the home advantage, we’re backing the hosts to earn a narrow 1-0 victory at odds of 9/2 with Unibet.
