Swansea City vs Birmingham City Match Preview
Birmingham City boss Garry Monk makes his first competitive return to the club he served for well over 11 years continuously as player and manager.
Monk was associated with Swansea during the longest sustained successful period in their history, comprising three promotions and consolidation in the Premier League, the League Cup triumph in 2013 and the ensuing Europa League campaign the following season.
Via spells at Leeds and Middlesbrough, the 39-year-old is now at Birmingham and finds himself in the same Championship mid-table area as his Welsh former employers.
Only one point separates these clubs in Swansea’s favour and both are in position to launch a challenge for the play-offs as things stand, although Birmingham face a potential deduction next month when a hearing takes place regarding the club’s breach of spending rules.
On current form, Swansea are going better as their manager Graham Potter looks to be getting his message across now following his arrival from Swedish football last summer and they have cruised into the fifth round of the FA Cup.
But Monk will be eager to show the locals he is still a very effective manager following his sacking by the Swans after just 22 months in charge – didn’t it seem like longer? – and his Blues are backed to claim a point.
