Sunderland vs Walsall Match Preview

Sunderland were expected to bounce back to the Championship this season after their shock relegation from the second tier last season, a second successive demotion following their drop from the Premier League the season before. With unpopular owner Ellis Short finally ousted last summer, Jack Ross was the man chosen by the new regime to lead the club back into the second tier but his chances of doing that hang in the balance.

After a 0-0 draw with second placed Barnsley in midweek, the Black Cats find themselves in third place, four points away from the automatic promotion spot but with a game in hand on the Tykes. That draw summed up their season, with a record number of tied games the issue that has stopped them from seriously challenging for the title. The chase for a top two finish hasn’t quite ended just yet though and a win here would be hugely important at 1/2 with PaddyPower.

Walsall find themselves deep in the relegation mire in the bottom half of the League One table as things stand. In what is a remarkably tight bottom half of the table, the Saddlers currently sit in 19th place, just two points and two places clear of the relegation zone but equally just four points from the middle of the table but they now take on two of the most difficult oppositions in the league in the shape of Sunderland and Barnsley.

These two fixtures come on the back of another difficult fixture in midweek which saw them go down 2-3 at the hands of Portsmouth and the signs aren’t good for Dean Keates’ side coming into this incredibly difficult spell of games since they have picked up just one point from an available 12 on the road in their last four games. They have however avoided defeat in three previous meetings with Sunderland so far this term, can they pull off a shock here at 11/2 with William Hill?

We’re backing a low-scoring affair here. Sunderland have built their side on a strong defence under Jack Ross this season and as such it’s no surprise that less than three goals have been scored in their last five matches in all competitions. In the two FA Cup clashes between the sides earlier in the season saw just three goals shared between the sides and that’s why we’re backing under 2.5 goals to be scored again here at evens with William Hill.

This is a must-win game for Sunderland. The Black Cats have dropped too many points in recent drawn matches against beatable opposition and they take on a side struggling towards the foot of the table here and particularly struggling away from home of late, failing to get on the scoresheet in their last three fixtures on the road. That’s why we’re backing the home win to nil at odds of 6/4 with Bet365.
