Sunderland vs Oxford Match Preview
Sunderland open the new campaign as they host Oxford United on Saturday afternoon and they surely hope to so in great fashion, coming off a tough pre-season campaign and a mixed bag of impressions ahead of the League One opener – where they were shut down by both Belenenses (1-0) and Heerenveen (0-1) in two open-to-public friendlies.
Black Cats have thus struggled to create and convert chances once again and while many question if Will Grigg will now finally rediscover his fine form in front of the goal, it’s fair to note Jack Ross set up a tough defensive line against tough opposition. Jordan Willis feels like a great addition and we do feel they’ll be motivated to build on such consistency here.
Oxford have, on the other hand, seen a similarly tough streak through their last part of their pre-season and now come into the match with a five-match winless streak. They’ve seen 1-1 draws against Woking, Fulham, and Solihull Moors as well as losses to Eastleigh (3-0) and QPR (1-2) along the way.
It feels Karl Robinson has more work to do in the transfer market this summer and while there are rumours, this could affect their early campaign. U’s finished huge 13 points behind the top 6 last term and doing better will be imperative regardless of their transfer market.
Still, we don’t see the visitors off to a good start and we’ll now rather stick with Sunderland to bag the points in front of the home fans, where a Home win feels like a banker bet at 6/10 with Ladbrokes and has seen many big hitters lumping already.
We feel they’ll have to base such success on a tough defensive display once again, though, and with that in mind – we’ll also back the Black Cats to keep a clean sheet at 6/5 with William Hill. We’ve seen them very tough to break down and we now hope to see more of the same.
