Sunderland vs Manchester City Under-21 Match Preview
Just like their senior colleagues, Manchester City Under-21s have been scoring plenty of goals recently – and that gives them a chance against Sunderland in the Checkatrade Trophy quarter-finals.
While Pep Guardiola’s first XI have found the net 22 times without reply in their last four matches, Paul Harsley’s academy team are not so strong defensively but they have still seen off League One clubs Barnsley and Rochdale in the knockout stage of this competition.
Penalties were required after a 3-3 draw at Oakwell and then City hit back from 2-0 down at the break to win 4-2 at Rochdale, on the latter occasion without exciting 18-year-old forward Rabbi Matondo who is regarded as one of the most talented young prospects around.
It will be even tougher, potentially, for the only academy team left in this season’s EFL Trophy on their trip to Sunderland, who have conceded only a solitary goal in their five matches so far and even then they still ran out comfortable winners against Carlisle.
Jack Ross is clearly taking this competition pretty seriously with his League One promotion-chasers as he tries to bring the good times back to Wearside.
This is a tie that really sums up what the Checkatrade Trophy is about because the Black Cats are bound to field a few seasoned pros, but City’s prodigies should be no pushovers and may just cause what the bookmakers clearly feel would be an upset.
