Two big Championship names go head to head at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday afternoon and going into the new season, both will have had hopes that they could challenge for promotion. Stoke were disappointing last season, but Derby reached the playoff final only to be beaten by Aston Villa. A repeat of that, but a better end outcome, will be on their agenda.
New boss Phillip Cocu has settled in straight away and guided his team to a victory and a draw from their opening two games. They played very well away at Huddersfield on the opening weekend and didn’t fare too badly last weekend when drawing with Swansea, although they would prefer to be a little more clinical in front of goal, something they will more than likely have been working on this week.
It has been a tough start to the season for Stoke, with two defeats. Had they come against top teams it wouldn’t have been too bad, but they came against QPR and Charlton, two teams who are expected to be in the bottom half this season, and two teams that should be beaten if Stoke are to have realistic promotion claims. Those look some way off at the moment, and they need to find some form quickly.
This looks to be a perfect time to play Stoke as they are clearly struggling to get going, and that gives Derby a great opportunity to record their second win of the season and maintain their unbeaten start under new boss Cocu. We are backing Derby to pick up the win but having seen Stoke score goals in their two defeats so far, we do think they are capable of getting on the score sheet so we are also backing both teams to score in this one.
