St Mirren vs Edinburgh City Match Preview
Jim Goodwin suffered a disappointing start to his St Mirren reign at the weekend, but is expected to get his first win on the board in this League Cup match against Edinburgh City.
The 37-year-old Irishman, who played for St Mirren from 2011-16 and was on the coaching staff before joining Alloa as their manager, returned to Paisley this summer to replace Oran Kearney – whose commuting from his home in Northern Ireland was reported to have rankled with the club’s board, from a commitment perspective.
Kearney had done a good job in keeping Saints in the Premiership by the skin of their teeth, specifically by winning the play-off in a penalty shootout, and staying up this season will be the first priority for new boss Goodwin.
There was not the best of starts on Sunday, however, as the Buddies lost their League Cup opener 3-2 at home to Championship club Dunfermline having been 3-0 down at half time, and Group H is one that St Mirren will have fully expected to win.
They may well still do so, but they really need maximum points against an Edinburgh City side who are playing their first match of this season’s competition and ply their trade three divisions below their hosts, albeit they finished a creditable third in the table last term.
There was a much better second-half showing from St Mirren on Sunday and they are backed to build on that promise with a comfortable success here.
