Ross County have made an excellent start to the 2019-20 Scottish League Cup, but things are expected to become much tougher when they visit St Johnstone.
The Highland club received a fairly charmed start to the new season as their first two Group B games were against opponents from the bottom two tiers of the Scottish league system, Montrose and Brechin City, whom they beat 4-1 at home and 4-0 away respectively.
Young striker Ross Stewart has begun the campaign in sparkling form for his namesake employers, bagging a double in both games as the Dingwall-based outfit have continued the progress that earned them promotion back to the top flight at the first time of asking last term.
However, visiting St Johnstone is a totally different kettle of fish, even though the team from Perth are playing catch-up to qualify for the knockout stage of this competition after losing their only group game so far 1-0 away to Montrose.
Unlike their opponents on Tuesday, Tommy Wright’s side did not have the fitness advantage of a previous game, but will be all the better for getting that under their belt and they have been among Scotland’s top eight teams for all of the past 10 seasons.
The bookmakers clearly believe St Johnstone are essentially a better team than Ross County and we think that will be borne out here.
