St Johnstone v Celtic Match Preview

St Johnstone have gained a reputation for being something of a yo-yo club between the top two divisions of Scottish football over the years but the Tayside outfit now seem to have established themselves in the top tier for the time being at least. Former Northern Ireland international Tommy Wright is now into his fifth year as manager of the club and they look like one of the more stable clubs in the Scottish Premiership as they look for a top six finish this time around.

As things stand the Saints are sitting in sixth position in the table, thanks in no small part to a run of four consecutive wins over the last few weeks that eventually culminated with a 2-0 defeat at Hearts last weekend and was followed up with another 2-0 away defeat when they met Celtic in midweek. Having lost 0-6 when they last welcomed the Bhoys to McDiarmid Park, the Saints will be keen to exact revenge on the league leaders with a shock win here at 8/1 with Betfair.

Celtic find themselves in more of a title battle than they have been used to in recent years this season but are still in pole position to retain the Scottish Premiership trophy this year. That 2-0 home win at Parkhead in midweek has extended their gap at the top to a more comfortable six points, but Rangers and Kilmarnock may have cut that lead back to three by the time of kick-off at McDiarmid Park as they both play their league fixtures ahead of this Sunday afternoon clash.

After losing to Old Firm rivals Rangers in their final game before the winter break, Brendan Rodgers’ men seem to have benefitted from the winter break and have returned to action in the best possible form by picking up four consecutive wins over Airdrieonians, St Mirren, Hamilton Academicals and St Johnstone without conceding a goal.  Can they beat the Saints again for the second time in a matter of days here at odds of 42/100 with William Hill?

The Bhoys have looked very strong at the back since the end of the winter break, keeping four consecutive clean sheets in their four matches in all competitions since returning earlier this month. St Johnstone may be in the top half of the table as things stand but their squad lacks an out-and-out goalscorer, with none of their players managing more than five league goals so far this term and they’ve failed to find the net in their last two outings, which is why we’re on the away win to nil here at 11/8 with Coral.

Callum McGregor may not have enjoyed his best season in front of goal so far this term, but after ending a long wait to get on the scoresheet by finding the net in the 3-0 win over Hamilton Academicals last weekend, he followed that up with another strike in the victory over St Johnstone on Wednesday night. Can the Scottish international make it three in three here? He’s priced at 6/1 for a goal at any time with Paddy Power.
