Villarreal are suffering a terrible season in La Liga and it is difficult to see things improving for them when they switch their sights to Europe and this test against Sporting Lisbon.

The Yellow Submarine are in danger of being relegated from the Spanish top flight because they simply cannot win games, having failed to taste victory in La Liga since November.

They were unbeaten in their Europa League group, reeling off four consecutive clean sheets to finish top of the table ahead of Rapid Vienna, Rangers and Spartak Moscow, but they drew all three games away from home – and that has become a very familiar story for Villarreal.

Javier Calleja’s side would probably be quite happy with a draw in Lisbon, and on the basis that Sporting have won only two of their last nine matches in all competitions it appears distinctly achievable.

But of those seven games Sporting failed to win, only two were against teams below them in the Portuguese league table and Marcel Kaizer’s side had no problems in joining Arsenal by strolling to qualification for this opening knockout round.

Confidence should be higher in the Sporting camp than with Villarreal and at the odds available the Lions look a good bet to put themselves firmly in the driving seat to advance from this tie.
