Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview
Tottenham have already lost once in 2020 away to a flying Southampton side, but may just have gleaned enough confidence from their midweek win against Norwich to gain revenge.
There is no question Southampton have been in much better recent form than Spurs, whose only win in their previous six matches before Wednesday had been at home to Middlesbrough in their FA Cup third-round replay.
But the shot in the arm from Heung-min Son’s clinching goal that secured a 2-1 victory over the Canaries may just give Jose Mourinho’s side the impetus to now go on a run in both the Premier League and FA Cup, if not the Champions League which resumes next month.
Obviously Tottenham would have to do that without injured Harry Kane and, at the time of writing on Thursday afternoon, there was no immediate sign of them signing a striker to cover for the loss of the England captain.
How they could do with Danny Ings, who has bagged 16 goals this term and been instrumental as Southampton have climbed into the top half of the Premier League table with five wins in their last seven games.
Saints clearly have a fine chance of knocking out Spurs, but Mourinho can boast an excellent record in cup competitions having won six of them during his time managing English clubs and his current side are backed to take another step closer to their former temporary home of Wembley.
