Tottenham returned to winning ways with an excellent midweek Champions League victory away to Borussia Dortmund, which will have boosted the team’s confidence for this trip.
A run of two defeats and a draw in their last three Premier League games mean Spurs have dropped from being potential title challengers to battling for a top-four place with Manchester United, Chelsea and even Arsenal all waiting to pounce for their current third spot.
But Harry Kane’s clinical finish in Dortmund sent Mauricio Pochettino’s side into the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-0 aggregate success and if they can come through that test in such fashion, they should have no fears about the journey down to Southampton.
Saints need the points too because they are the club immediately outside the relegation zone and while they appear to have improved under Ralph Hasenhuttl, the progress has not really manifested in terms of results.
They lost a thriller 3-2 at Manchester United last weekend when a couple of wonder goals from Yan Valery and James Ward-Prowse showed what Southampton are capable of.
However, there is a big gulf in quality between they and Tottenham and now that the North Londoners have picked up the winning thread again, they can start resisting those threats to their top-four status by triumphing on the south coast.
