Southampton vs Newcastle Match Preview
Newcastle beat West Brom (2-3) in FA Cup midway through the week and ended their three-match winless streak seen in Premier League, which sees them sitting just five points clear of the relegation zone once again. They now travel to Southampton desperate to jump the rivals and escape the danger zone.
Magpies did feel tougher to beat lately and they suffered just two losses in 12 outings across competitions. They’ve seen six draws and four wins along the way, having struggled to score goals more recently and Steve Bruce will want his men to take confidence from Cup success.
Southampton have, on the other hand, seen a tougher schedule and suffered four losses in their last five outings. They’ve only interrupted the streak with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at this ground but already went on to suffer a comfortable 3-1 loss at struggling West Ham, which will be just as worrying.
Saints have been scoring goals on the regular and prove themselves a tougher side to beat at this ground on the regular. They beat Huddersfield (2-0), held off Tottenham (1-1) and suffered very narrow losses to Wolves (2-3) and Burnley (1-2) earlier this year. They will need more if they’re to build towards the mid-table, with a very tough schedule looming.
We will now stick our necks out for Newcastle to build on such a mid-week performance and we’ll go for them to snatch at least a point at St Mary’s, going for an enticing Double Chance – Draw or Away win at 6/5 with William Hill.
We do expect to see goals and they’ll have to cope in the final third if they’re to make it happen. We’ll thus also go for a Yes on Both teams to score, which comes at 10/11 with bet365 and looks like a solid approach to the fixture as well.
