Southampton vs Huddersfield Town Match Preview
Southampton have shown real improvement over the last month or so and been given a fine chance of making FA Cup progress with a home tie against Huddersfield.
Saints were looking destined for a relegation battle until starting a run of five wins in eight Premier League matches that has lifted them to 12th in the table, five points above the drop zone, as 2020 started in perfect fashion with a 1-0 St Mary’s victory over Tottenham.
Danny Ings is flavour of the month in the ranks of goalscorers having notched 14 times in his last 16 games, although manager Ralph Hasenhuttl may see this as an opportunity to rest the team’s current talisman – albeit he was on the bench for all bar the last 21 minutes of the excellent 2-0 Boxing Day triumph at Chelsea.
As for Huddersfield, they have undoubtedly been galvanised by Danny Cowley after last season’s dismal relegation from the top flight and the poor start they made to this Championship campaign under previous manager Jan Siewert.
The Terriers are five points above the relegation zone and should consolidate, while for this tie it is worth remembering that Cowley took Lincoln to the FA Cup quarter-finals three seasons ago when they were still a non-League club.
Huddersfield are expected to be competitive here, but Southampton’s current form suggests they will get the job done and reach the fourth round at the first time of asking.
