Southampton vs Everton Match Preview
These clubs began the weekend either side of the relegation line in the Premier League table – but Southampton need a landslide success here if they are to climb above Everton.
Although Unai Emery is closing fast on the rails, Ralph Hasenhuttl and Marco Silva, managers of Southampton and Everton respectively, are the two favourites in their division’s Sack Race market and if either suffers a big defeat on Saturday they could be in real trouble.
Hasenhuttl’s position is under threat largely because of one result, the 9-0 mauling by Leicester in Saints’ last home game. Since then, they have performed much better in two away league and cup defeats by more respectable margins at Manchester City.
Silva, on the other hand, is in jeopardy because of the expectation at Everton. It may sound harsh but events at Goodison Park last weekend actually did him no harm, with the focus being on the terrible injury to Andre Gomes rather than the Toffees staying fourth bottom of the table as they snatched a last-gasp equaliser against Tottenham.
Everton are three points above Southampton but would need to lose by six goals to be overtaken by them here. Surely there cannot be a remarkable scoreline at St Mary’s for the second match in a row?!
Essentially, Southampton are poor at home (see stats above) and Everton no better away, with only one point collected from a possible 15 on the road this term. They are both very difficult to trust for a win and so a share of the spoils is the bet that appeals most to us here.
