Southampton vs Cardiff City Match Preview

Southampton’s tendency to draw rather than win, especially at home, means they are well worth opposing at a short price against Cardiff.

Saints remain an enigma under manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. They are definitely harder to beat since the Austrian’s arrival, undefeated in their last seven games, but they struggle badly to keep clean sheets and that is stopping them from collecting more victories.

They were largely second best at Burnley last weekend despite leading for most of the second half and a converted stoppage-time penalty which meant the spoils were shared was the least their opponents deserved.

Cardiff have had a traumatic few weeks due to the Emiliano Sala tragedy and they warrant great credit for their last two performances, especially the 2-0 win at home to Bournemouth which evoked an outpouring of emotion from their highly stressed manager Neil Warnock.

The 70-year-old Yorkshireman will hope his team can continue to produce displays of which he said Sala would be “proud”, and they have a great incentive here to leap out of the relegation zone and above 16th-placed Southampton with a win.

The Bluebirds’ away form has been poor, but they won at Leicester just after Christmas and look worth keeping on side here with Southampton so unreliable on their own pitch.
