Southampton vs Bournemouth Match Preview
Southampton were staring down the barrel at relegation earlier in the season after a dreadful start to the campaign under Mark Hughes. The former player returned to the club towards the back end of last season and did enough to keep his team’s heads above water in the final games of the season but he couldn’t carry any momentum from that dubious success into the new campaign and was duly sacked in December.
His replacement, former RB Leipzig boss Ralph Hassenhuttl, has managed to lead the team to some far better results in the second half of the campaign and there have been stand-out victories against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Everton along the way meaning they now possess a relatively healthy six point gap on the relegation zone with just three games remaining. A win here at 19/20 with Bet365 could confirm their safety.
AFC Bournemouth continue to establish themselves at the top table of English football. Despite spending the majority of their history in the lower reaches of the football pyramid, the Dorset club have risen to the Premier League in recent years and are now in their fourth consecutive season at the top table and in the early stages of this campaign they were even being considered as an outside shot for European qualification such was their form.
In the second half of the campaign, as they have traditionally done across those four seasons, the Cherries have struggled to keep up the momentum and as such have slipped to 14th place in the table. They’re safe from relegation, but have lost three of their last four Premier League games. The supporters will be desperate to turn that form around and earn only a second Premier League win over their south coast rivals at 14/5 with William Hill.
Southampton have been the better one of these two teams in the last couple of months and they’ve had the better of Bournemouth in the Premier League era for the most part too. With the home advantage, we suspect the Saints will take all three points again here, but they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last four and Cherries always carry a threat on the counter-attack through players like Ryan Fraser and Josh King. The home win and both teams to score bet is available at 11/4 with Bet365.
Shane Long has been a figure of ridicule at times in his Southampton career for his lack of goals but he’s found his shooting boots recently. The Irish forward broke the Premier League record for the fastest ever goal in Tuesday night’s draw with Watford and now has three goals in his last four games. You can back him to make it four from five by finding the net again in this game at odds of 15/8 with PaddyPower.
