Slovakia may be just as eager to know what is happening in Cardiff on Tuesday as they will to register a vital Euro 2020 qualifying success at home to Azerbaijan.

Three teams will kick off with a chance of booking an automatic place at next summer’s tournament from Group E along with Croatia, and only a win in Trnava is good enough if Slovakia are to leap from fourth to second in the table.

Even then, victory for the Falcons would suffice only if Wales and Hungary were to draw. Such a result in the Welsh capital suits nobody except Slovakia, who would then, provided they win themselves, advance on the head-to-head rule having twice beaten the current second-placed side, Hungary.

If there is a winner in Wales, then Slovakia would go into the play-offs regardless of their result against Azerbaijan as they bid to emulate their appearance at Euro 2016 in which they drew 0-0 with England, reached the knockout stage and then lost to Germany.

Azerbaijan is due to host three group matches and a quarter-final next summer, but its national team will not contest any of them as they have already failed to qualify.

On this occasion, they are expected to play a supporting role as Slovakia bid to book their place among the 24 countries with a chance of conquering the continent – and we think Pavel Hapal’s side will do what they need to do before turning their attention to events in Cardiff.
