Shrewsbury Town vs Liverpool Match Preview
Shrewsbury Town, who enter the weekend 60th in the English football league pyramid, have a wonderful opportunity to write their name into FA Cup folklore on Sunday by beating the mighty Liverpool.
Normally, especially considering the Merseysiders are carrying all before them this season, the chances of an upset in such a match-up would be slim. But the bookmakers are giving Shrewsbury a sniff of an upset – and it is easy to understand their logic.
Essentially, the FA Cup is not a priority for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, this term or seemingly in any other. He has never been past this fourth-round stage and there are much bigger fish to fry just now, what with a huge lead in the Premier League title race and the defence of the Champions League resuming in a few weeks’ time.
Klopp named a distinctly second-string side against a powerful Everton line-up in the third round and yet they still won 1-0.
He is likely to rotate his squad considerably again here, resting key players for next week’s league games against West Ham and Southampton and giving chances to the likes of third-round goalscoring hero Curtis Jones, Joel Matip, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi.
And yet players of that quality should still be able to conquer Shrewsbury, who did superbly to knock out Bristol City at home in a replay but are 16th in League One, albeit only seven points outside the play-off zone with a game in hand.
Sam Ricketts’ side will never get a better chance to take such a momentous scalp, but Liverpool are simply unstoppable and whoever Klopp sends out should be able to get the job done at the first time of asking.
