Fourth place in La Liga this season, and resulting Champions League group-stage football next term, is wide open – and on Sunday these two clubs will hope to boost their chances of claiming it at the expense of the other.
Sevilla and Valencia were sixth and seventh respectively entering the weekend as upstarts Getafe and Alaves were threatening to mix it with the elite in 2019-20 alongside Barcelona and the two major Madrid clubs.
This duo recently experienced contrasting Europa League fortunes as Sevilla, five-time winners of that competition within 11 years, surprisingly bowed out against Slavia Prague whereas Valencia have progressed to a quarter-final against their local rivals Villarreal.
As a result of that exit, and also for dropping out of the top four in La Liga, Sevilla have sacked coach Pablo Machin, who was only appointed last summer, and put their former manager and current director of football Joaquin Caparros in charge until the end of the campaign – as they did for a spell last season.
Caparros began his current tenure with a narrow win away to Espanyol just before the international break in which Los Rojiblancos were more solid defensively than of late.
However, Valencia, who are through to the Copa del Rey Final against Barcelona, have not suffered a defeat that ultimately mattered since January 5 and they are backed to sustain that record by returning home from Seville with a point.
