Scotland vs Russia Match Preview
Scotland have two routes open towards reaching the Euro 2020 finals and will aim to make further progress down one of them by beating Russia at Hampden Park.
Steve Clarke’s side know that if Plan A does not work and they fail to secure automatic qualification in Group I, they still have the fallback option of the play-offs next March in which they are guaranteed a place due to their exploits in the inaugural Nations League.
But Scotland would rather book a first tournament appearance since 1998 by right and if they were to get the better of the Russians here, they would draw level with their opponents for a share of second position in the group table at the halfway stage.
Clarke took over as manager from Alex McLeish before the two June qualifiers, which resulted in a dramatic last-gasp home win over Cyprus and a 3-0 defeat away to group leaders Belgium. This time, he has a more experienced squad at his disposal, especially in attack with the return of Steven Naismith and Matt Phillips.
Russia, meanwhile, have won their last three qualifiers by a 14-0 aggregate and the only points they have dropped were in a 3-1 defeat away to Belgium.
As the stats above reveal, Scotland are very strong at home in competitive matches and that, when balanced with the excellent form Russia have been showing since their Brussels loss, suggests the draw is the best bet here.
