Scotland vs Kazakhstan Match Preview
Kazakhstan effectively ended Alex McLeish’s reign as Scotland manager – but in the reverse fixture, their current boss Steve Clarke will hope to keep building up the momentum.
Scotland’s Euro 2020 qualifying campaign began with a dreadful 3-0 defeat in Nur-Sultan and a few weeks later McLeish was sacked, even though he had already secured a place in the play-offs by virtue of his team’s results in the UEFA Nations League.
Clarke, his successor, did not have the most convincing of starts as he lost all four games against the two Group I qualifiers, Belgium and Russia, but he has won all of his other three matches and beating Kazakhstan would be the ideal way to prepare for the March play-offs.
If Scotland are to make it through to next summer’s finals, and a first major tournament appearance since the 1998 World Cup, they will have to beat probably Bulgaria and then either Serbia or Norway, although UEFA will not make that completely clear until Friday.
Although Kazakhstan will take some confidence from having beaten Scotland so convincingly in March, they are much stronger on home soil and tend to struggle when they visit western Europe (see stats above).
This looks a good chance for the Scots to claim revenge, but they rarely make life easy for themselves against all but the weakest opposition and one goal may be enough to get the job done at Hampden Park against opponents that are likely to set up quite defensively.
