Scotland vs Cyprus Predictions
Scotland begin a new era under the guidance of Steve Clarke in this match. Although Alex McLeish had enjoyed a somewhat successful UEFA Nations League campaign in which his side finished above Israel and Albania actually picked up a victory in his last game, it was the embarrassing away defeat to Kazakhstan to begin this qualifying campaign that probably led to his sacking. Clarke comes into replace him following a successful spell at Kilmarnock.
With that success in the UEFA Nations League offering the Tartan Army a secondary route of qualification if Clarke isn’t able to turn around their fortunes int he group following that defeat at the hands of San Marino, can the former Chelsea man start to get the most out of a talented but inexperienced young team? He’ll be desperate to get off to a winning start at odds of 1/2 with William Hill.
Cyprus have never before managed to reach the finals of a major European competition, but strides are being made as the standard of football begins to improve in the country. Not only have the national team started to improve, (showcased by the fact that they have lost just three of their last seven games), but some of the nation’s club sides have started to establish themselves as regulars in the Champions League and the Europa League.
After some decent form of late and a valiant effort in a tough UEFA Nations League Group that saw them pick up results against Bulgaria and Slovakia, the Blue and Whites have started this Euro 2020 qualifying group with an expected victory over San Marino and an expected defeat against Belgium. An away win here would give their fans every reason to start dreaming though at odds of 7/1 with Bet365.
We’re anticipating a low-scoring affair here. Scotland have not been particularly impressive in front of goal for the last few years, but they should have enough quality to prevent the visitors from having too many chances here, particularly as Ran Ben Shimon’s men have failed to score in two of their last three matches. It could be a nervy start for Clarke’s side too so under 2.5 goals looks good to us at 4/6 with Bet365.
For a longer odds punt, we like the odds of 4/1 from PaddyPower from our 1-0 score prediction to come off. The hosts have the better squad on paper and although the visitors won’t go down without a fight, as showcased by their performances in the Nations League, we are backing a successful start for Steve Clarke and a huge, hard-fought three points for the Tartan Army.
