Scotland vs Belgium Predictions
Scotland’s chances of qualifying from this particular group are slim, but having beaten Albania and Israel to the top spot in their UEFA Nations League group, the Tartan Army are at least certain of a play-off fixture as they look to qualify for an international tournament for the first time since 1998 under the guidance of new manager Steve Clarke, who took over in May following the end of Alex McLeish’s short-lived tenure.
It’s a good job that Clarke has that play-off fixture to fall back on as chances of qualification from the group are looking slim after five matches. Wins over minnows San Marino and Cyprus have perhaps gone some way to masking the problems that have arisen in Scotland’s defeats to Kazakhstan, Belgium and most recently Russia and those losses mean that anything less than an unlikely win here at 8/1 with Bet365 could see Scotland’s hopes of a top two finish all but over.
Belgium are looking set to qualify with a degree of ease on the other hand. Having enjoyed their best ever performance at the World Cup in 2018, finishing in third place having lost to eventual winners France in the semi-finals, the Red Devils have won nine of their 11 games since the end of that tournament, although a 5-2 defeat to Switzerland saw them miss out on the UEFA Nations League Finals on goal difference.
Qualifying for the competition has been something of a breeze for Roberto Martinez’s side though as they have swept all five of their group opponents aside so far, winning their five fixtures by more than one goal which gives them an eight-point gap over third placed Kazakhstan with just five games remaining. After beating Scotland 3-0 in the reverse fixture, they’re heavy favourites to win again here at 2/5 with Ladbrokes.
We’re backing another comfortable win for Belgium here and given that they’ve enjoyed a winning margin of two or more goals in every one of their five qualifying fixtures for Euro 2020 so far, we’re liking odds of 23/20 with Coral for them to win with a one goal handicap again here. Scotland will struggle to cope with their attacking quality and as such, Roberto Martinez’s men should ensure another comfortable victory in this game.
Having been rested for the comfortable win over San Marino on Friday night, Romelu Lukaku will be hoping to be restored to the starting line-up for this game at Hampden Park. The Inter Milan forward scored twice in the reverse fixture in Brussels and he is his nation’s all-time leading scorer with a terrific record of 48 goals in just 81 caps. The 26 year old is our anytime scorer pick here at odds of 21/20 with Ladbrokes.
