Schalke host Borussia Monchengladbach for their Matchday 18 derby clash as the sides return to Bundesliga after almost a month-long break, hoping to challenge the top 4 with all-important points on Friday evening and build on a convincing friendly win over Hamburger SV (0-4) seen last week.

Miners have been held off by both Wolfsburg (1-1) and Freiburg (2-2) in their last two December outings and this could be more worrying despite extending their lengthy unbeaten streak at VELTINS-Arena. They only saw Bayern Munich (0-3 back in August) snatch all three points this term and building on such records will be crucial if they’re to make the top 4.

Borussia Monchengladbach will be no easy rivals to deal with, though, and they’ve proven it many times this term. They have lost on their consistency too, though, and now look for their second win in four league outings – beaten by Wolfsburg (2-1) and held off by Hertha (0-0) on their last two trips.

Foals have struggled to score numbers of goals when away from home lately and Marco Rose will hope the attacking line can regain confidence. His men will have a lot to prove if they’re to make this a serious title challenge and points in Gelsenkirchen would surely come as a great boost to their confidence early in 2020.

We don’t feel they’ll be able to do so but we expect the visitors very motivated, which promises an exciting occasion on the day. We’re still sticking our necks out for the sides to share the spoils in a Draw priced at 5/2 with Paddy Power – which looks like the best approach at this point.
