Schalke vs Borussia Dortmund Match Preview

Two of the nine clubs remarkably separated by just two points at the top of the Bundesliga table entering the weekend go head-to-head in Gelsenkirchen – but both could find themselves slipping off the pace.

At present, it’s making a refreshing change that the Bundesliga is so competitive. Bayern Munich are not racing away at the summit – yet – and the likes of Freiburg, Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach can all dream about what the season could deliver for them.

Dortmund, of course, will have aspirations of dethroning Bayern as champions, but it cannot have made life easier for their manager Lucien Favre that Jose Mourinho has this week been linked with his job – that’s clearly a signal that all is not hunky dory at the Westfalenstadion.

BVB lost 2-0 at Inter Milan in the Champions League this week and have also conceded two or more goals in all of their last three domestic away matches, so defending on their travels is clearly an area they need to improve – perhaps prompting the Mourinho connection.

Schalke have improved from last term when they flirted with relegation and David Wagner appears to be doing a similar job with them as he did at Huddersfield, whom he led to the Premier League, in the sense of gelling his resources into a very effective team unit.

Ultimately, the Bundesliga table will spread out and Dortmund will be expected to finish ahead of Schalke, but for the time being the Black and Yellows are not convincing enough at the back and they may have to settle for a point here.
