Schalke 04 did incredibly well last season to finish second behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga but they’ve struggled to live up to the expectations set by that terrific campaign in the current one. With 21 matches on the board, die Knappen currently sit in a disappointing 14th place, just two places clear of the relegation play-off spot in the Bundesliga and alarmingly, they’ve picked up just one point from the last available nine in the league.

In one of the more open Champions League groups though, Domenico Tedesco’s men performed well and lost just one of their six games at that stage to qualify along with Porto and ahead of Lokomotiv Moscow and Galatasaray. Their reward for doing so is this tie with Manchester City and a chance for former star Leroy Sane to return to the Veltins Arena although progression does seem unlikely, hence odds for the home win in the first leg being out at 21/2 with BetVictor.

Manchester City were hoping to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet this season after last year’s dominance in the Premier League. The Citizens have every chance of doing that too as they remain in all four competitions at this stage of the season, having gone through to the final of the EFL Cup as well as the knock-out stages in the Champions League and they currently sit top of the Premier League table on goal difference although Liverpool do have a game in hand.

After going down in a surprising 1-2 defeat at the hands of Olympique Lyonnais in their opening Champions League game this season, Pep Guardiola’s men had to pick up 13 points from the next available 15 to secure top spot in a fairly difficult group. This is the trophy that has thus far managed to elude the club since they became one of the elite European outfits and Guardiola will be keen to ensure they remain in the competition by winning this tie. They’re priced at 4/13 to win the first leg with Unibet.

Manchester City have been in particularly ruthless form in front of goal of late. The Citizens racked up six goals in their win over Chelsea last weekend in the Premier League and they’ve actually won eight of their last ten games by more than one goal in a run that included a 9-0 win over Burton Albion and a 5-0 mauling of Burnley. This Schalke side looks low on confidence at the moment so it’s no surprise that we’re backing City to win with a one goal handicap at 4/5 with Ladbrokes.
