San Marino vs Scotland Match Preview
San Marino are the whipping boys of international football in Europe. The tiny microstate is surrounded by Italy and has a population of just 33,000 to choose from, meaning they often find themselves bottom of the pile in qualifying groups and on the end of huge hammerings from the better teams. In fact, it’s been 33 matches since they managed to avoid defeat and even that was in a Hybrid Friendly versus Italian fourth tier opposition.
It was hoped that teams such as San Marino would benefit from playing teams of their level in the UEFA Nations League this season but as it turned out Franco Varrella’s men lost all six of their group stage matches against Moldova, Luxembourg and Belarus and they were hammered 5-0 by Cyprus in their first Euro 2020 qualifier on Thursday evening. Can they pull off what would be the biggest result in their history here at 40/1 with PaddyPower.
Scotland may not have qualified for a major international tournament for over 20 years now but things seemed to be heading in the right direction after a successful UEFA Nations League group stage. The Tartan Army won two and lost two of their four matches against Israel and Albania but managed to top the group regardless, giving them a guaranteed play-off spot minimum in their attempts to qualify for the European Championships.
It may turn out to be a saving grace for the British side as their actual qualifying campaign got off to the worst possible start on Thursday afternoon. An embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan leaves Scotland with plenty of work to do if they’re to secure a top two spot in this group but they should take solace from the fact that they should be able to pick up an uncomplicated three points from this trip at odds of 1/33 with Bet365.
Despite defeat in Kazakhstan, Scotland should surely have too much quality to be stopped by this San Marino outfit. The minnows shipped no fewer than 51 goals in 10 matches in their last qualifying campaign and they endured a tough opening fixture in this campaign, losing 5-0 to Cyprus. As such, the likes of James Forrest, Oliver McBurnie and Ryan Fraser should have a field day here. Scotland to win with a three goal handicap is available at 11/10 with PaddyPower.
James Forrest is undoubtedly the man to watch in this Scotland side right now. The Celtic winger is not only enjoying his best season in front of goal for the Bhoys with 10 Scottish Premiership goals to his name so far this term, but he’s been in terrific form for his country lately, picking up five goals in his last three outings which is why we can’t resist odds of 9/2 with William Hill for the 27 year old to open the scoring in this fixture.
