San Marino vs Russia Match Preview
Russia were among the first few teams to qualify for Euro 2020 and this dead rubber in San Marino may be a chance for manager Stanislav Cherchesov to experiment somewhat ahead of next summer’s tournament.
Although they have lost both of their Group I matches against Belgium, the Russians have won all their other games to advance with relatively little fuss and thus build on the potential they showed when reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup they hosted last year.
Effective at both ends of the pitch, Russia have a very productive striker in their captain Artem Dzyuba (see stats above) and are also solid at the back with six clean sheets out of nine so far in this campaign. But the fact they have twice been decisively beaten by Belgium indicates they are still a level below Europe’s very best teams.
Cherchesov has several uncapped, or little-tried, players in his squad whom he could blood in San Marino – although which kit they will wear was uncertain at the time of writing. It was reported the players refused to wear a new style of shirt against Belgium as they thought the design on the sleeve resembled the flag of Serbia more than Russia’s!
As for San Marino, they scored their first goal for over two years against Kazakhstan on Saturday but will know this game is all about suffering the least heavy defeat they can.
At home, San Marino are better defensively than on their travels, but this should still end in an emphatic Russian victory whichever line-up Cherchesov sends out.
