Rotherham United vs Manchester United Under-21 Match Preview
James Garner, who scored for the Manchester United first team on their recent trip to Australia, is among the players set to represent the Red Devils in their first ever taste of EFL Trophy action.
Premier League academy teams have been allowed to compete in this competition since 2016-17 but United are late to the party, only now giving their youngsters the opportunity to test themselves in “men’s football” against sides from the Championship downwards.
United have been blooding their kids in pre-season and the likes of Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong have greatly impressed, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may well want to keep them with the senior squad ahead of the Premier League opener against Chelsea.
But midfielder Garner, 18, looks set to be involved at the New York Stadium. He scored a fine goal against Perth Glory but since returning from the tour, he has reverted to the Under-23 team which last week visited Northern Ireland for a couple of pre-season fixtures.
Rotherham, meanwhile, are currently proving to be a yo-yo club between the Championship and League One and began their season at the lower of those levels on Saturday with a 2-1 win away to AFC Wimbledon in which Scottish defender Clark Robertson scored the winner.
Manager Paul Warne will probably make plenty of changes for this opening Northern Section Group H match – Doncaster and Lincoln are the other teams in the pool – and we are backing the visiting youngsters to hold their own against their more senior counterparts.
