Roma vs Porto Match Preview

Porto have plenty going for them in this tie and are fancied to put themselves in pole position to reach the Champions League quarter-finals by avoiding defeat in the Italian capital.

The Portuguese Primeira Liga title-holders have won both of their previous European ties against Roma, most recently triumphing 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico in the play-offs for this competition two seasons ago.

And although the Dragons had a favourable draw in the group stage this term, they were very impressive in taking 16 points from a possible 18 and were free-scoring too (see stats above).

Another thing in Porto’s favour is their overall form this season. From October to January they went on a run of 16 straight wins, and before Friday’s trip to Moreirense (result not known at the time of writing) they had failed to triumph only twice since that sequence began – in 0-0 draws away to Sporting Lisbon and Vitoria Guimaraes.

Roma, who were beaten by Liverpool in last season’s semi-finals of this competition, in contrast have been less convincing and were recently drubbed 7-1 away to Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia.

In fairness, the Giallorossi are a sterner proposition at home, but the evidence we have outlined suggests Porto can be at least on level terms heading back to Portugal and they should then repeat their 2015 feat of securing a place in the last eight.
