Rochdale vs Sunderland Match Preview
Rochdale are fighting against relegation back into League Two this season. The Greater Manchester club managed to avoid the drop on the last day of last season in dramatic circumstances thanks to a win over Charlton but this year has been similarly disappointing. With 39 games played the Dale sit in 23rd position in the table, but with a game in hand on most of the teams above them and with plenty of teams within a couple of points away.
What’s more, the side has started to pick up points again in recent weeks. Former player Brian Barry-Murphy took the reins from Keith Hill following his sacking last month and after picking up eight points from his first two games including wins over Scunthorpe and Shrewsbury at the Crown Oil Arena he has been handed the job on a permanent basis. Can he earn another win in his first fixture as the full-time boss at odds of 15/4 with Bet365.
Sunderland are looking to bring the good times back to the Stadium of Light this season. After two successive relegations have seen the Wearsiders fall from the heady heights of the Premier League down into the third tier, the club are now on more solid grounding having secured new owners, but their promotion chase hangs in the balance as they currently sit in third position, three points behind second placed Barnsley with two games in hand.
Having lost out at Wembley in the Checkatrade Trophy final last weekend, supporters of the North East club will be hoping to avoid the play-offs and another trip to the capital as they go in search of an automatic spot. The Black Cats are unbeaten in their last 17 league outings, although they have drawn more games than any other League One team this season with 16. You can back them to pick up three much needed points here at 3/4 with William Hill.
We’re backing goals in this game. Rochdale have struggled defensively all season and have the worst goals conceded record in the league with 77 shipped so far. They do possess a threat going forward through the likes of Ian Henderson and Aaron Wilbraham though and games involving Sunderland have been high-scoring recently – over 2.5 goals have been scored in their last three games. We’re backing the same here at 4/5 with Bet365.
Striker Will Grigg moved to the Stadium of Light from Wigan in the January transfer window and although he hasn’t yet caught fire, he is starting to get hotter in recent weeks. The Northern Irish international has scored in his last two league outings and he has enjoyed some of his best career performances at this ground in the past during his time with the Latics. The 27 year old is being backed for his fifth Sunderland goal at 7/5 with PaddyPower.
