Rochdale vs Sunderland Predictions
Rochdale were among the favourites to go down this season after two difficult campaigns struggling towards the foot of the League One table. In fact, the Dale have spent the vast majority of the last two years in the drop zone of the third tier table, before late bursts of form in both seasons managed to drag them out of the relegation mire in both campaigns. And after sacking long-serving manager Keith Hill at the end of last season, many feared the worst for this campaign.
However, it’s been a bright start from Brian Barry-Murphy’s side so far as they have picked up five points from their first three games, beating Tranmere Rovers before drawing with Doncaster Rovers and Shrewsbury and beating an inexperienced Bolton Wanderers outfit in the EFL Cup. Can the Greater Manchester outfit continue that unbeaten start to the campaign by overcoming Sunderland for the first time in their history here at 10/3 with Bet365.
Sunderland are expected to be among the frontrunners not only for promotion but to win the League One title this season. For a club their size, to even be in the third tier is slightly embarrassing and not only did they miss out on automatic promotion last season, the Black Cats also lost at Wembley on two occasions, being beaten by Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy Final and Charlton Athletic in the play-off final.
Now, the aim is to get promoted as champions and if they fall behind in that aim then manager Jack Ross will be under serious pressure. Their start to the season has been the same as Rochdale’s with two draws (against Oxford United and Ipswich Town) and one win (against Portsmouth), plus progressing through to the second round of the EFL Cup. You can back them to win at the Crown Oil Arena at odds of 19/20 with Unibet.
We think the Black Cats will have enough to secure the three points in this game, but it won’t be easy. Sunderland have struggled to break away from teams in the past and they only won at this stadium by a single goal last season. The Dale will be full of confidence following a strong start to the campaign so won’t go down without a fight, but we’re backing the superior quality to shine through in a narrow, one-goal away win at 13/5 with PaddyPower.
Lynden Gooch has enjoyed a productive start to the campaign, scoring his team’s goals in the 1-1 draws with Ipswich and Oxford to start the campaign. The American winger enjoyed one of his best performances of last season against Rochdale too, scoring a brace in Sunderland’s 4-1 home win over them at the Stadium of Light. We’re backing the 23 year old to get on the scoresheet again here at 5/2 with Betfair.
