Rochdale vs Newcastle Predictions
Rochdale have been a team to watch out for in cup competitions over the last few years. Having beaten both Leeds United and Nottingham Forest in front of their own fans in the FA Cup, the Dale also managed a draw with Tottenham Hotspur a couple of seasons ago (before the losing the replay at Wembley Stadium) and earlier this season they took Manchester United all the way to penalties at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup.
The league season hasn’t exactly gone to plan so far for Brian Barry-Murphy’s side though and they currently sit in 18th place with a cushion of just four points separating them from the relegation zone. A much-needed win over Accrington Stanley on New Year’s Day will undoubtedly have eased any worries among the Spotland fanbase, but attention now turns to the FA Cup and the thought of pulling off a shock win at odds of 19/4 with Unibet.
Whilst Rochdale’s recent cup history is something to be proud of Newcastle are making a pretty dreadful tradition out of early exits in both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. In fact, the Magpies haven’t won an away tie in this competition since they beat Cheltenham Town in 2006 and indeed in the last six seasons, League One Rochdale have actually made it beyond Round 3 more times than them despite having to play two earlier rounds.
In the league so far this season, Steve Bruce and his team have surpassed expectations with many pre-season predictions placing the side in a relegation battle. Although the Tynesiders could still be sucked into the scrap at the bottom of the table, as things stand they look relatively safe in 13th place, despite losing three consecutive fixtures to Manchester United, Everton and Leicester. The away win here is 4/6 with William Hill.
Although Dale certainly seem to have been able to summon the magic of the cup to Spotland in recent years, we think Steve Bruce will be keen to end his team’s poor run of results in this specific competition here. The Magpies will undoubtedly rest some of their stars after a difficult Christmas period, but given Dale’s poor home form of late (just one win in six), we expect the visitors to grind out a narrow one goal victory at 13/5 with Bet365.
One man who will hope for some game time here is striker Andy Carroll. The 30 year old forward was brought back to the club where he originally broke through over the summer but so far he has managed just four Premier League starts. His physicality may be key to unlocking a deep-lying Dale defence for the visitors so we’re backing the ex-England international to get on the scoresheet at odds of 15/8 with Paddy Power.
