Bolton have seen their three-match unbeaten streak ended in a seven-goal thriller against Burton (3-4), as two early goals proved insufficient with many defensive slip-ups once again. They sit huge 17 points behind 20th placed MK Dons (with three games in hand) and will be desperate to make the bottom of the table more interesting towards late in the campaign.
Wanderers beat Southend (3-2) and held off both Sunderland (0-0) and Shrewsbury (1-1) in three games late in 2019, ending the disappointing year on a positive note. They have still struggled for defensive consistency and Keith Hill has a lot to work on, if his men are to escape relegation against all odds.
Rochdale have, on the other hand, seen a disappointing second half of December but still managed to pick it up in 2020. They beat Accrington (1-2) on New Year’s and held Newcastle to a 1-1 FA Cup draw in front of the home fans, as Aaron Wilbraham shocked the Premier League rivals and secured the replay at St James’ Park.
Dale thus showed off as a tough side to beat in front of the home fans once again but they still have a lot to prove if they’re to climb the League One table. They sit just four points clear of the relegation zone and rediscovering consistency at home ground will be crucial in such an attempt.
