Republic of Ireland vs New Zealand Match Preview
Republic of Ireland have a busy week ahead and they host New Zealand for their Thursday’s friendly clash looking for a pick-me-up ahead of the all-important EURO 2020 Qualifiers clash against Denmark – where they top the Group D table but both Denmark and Switzerland still have a game in hand.
Boys in Green have been in good form but still saw their nine-match unbeaten streak across competitions ended by Switzerland (2-0) last time out, where goals from Haris Seferovic and Shane Duffy (OG) proved enough for them to drop all three points in Carouge.
New Zealand have seen a more lenient schedule and come into the match with six wins and a draw earned in seven outings since June 2018. They’ve beaten New Caledonia (2-1) in the Pacific Games Final to lift the Trophy in July but causing an upset at Aviva Stadium should prove much more of a challenge.
All Whites have been tougher to beat but still struggled to cause serious damage against big guns, last meeting Peru (2-0) in World Cup Intercontinental Play-offs. They have still been scoring goals lately and will have high hopes they can build on the performances in Dublin as well.
We don’t see them making it happen, though, and we feel Republic of Ireland should have what it takes to turn a rather narrow contest their way. We’ll thus go for a Home win to Nil, which seems like the best approach to the fixture on Thursday evening despite no high stakes involved.
We don’t really feel New Zealand will be sitting ducks and the team spirits they boast at the moment could make them a tough side to outclass. With that in mind, we hope not to see too many goals here and we’re also backing Under 2.5 Goals FT.
