Republic of Ireland vs Gibraltar Predictions
The Republic of Ireland are hoping for more success in the coming years under the temporary management of Mick McCarthy, who will then be replaced by current U21 boss Stephen Kenny. It’s been an improvement in results since Martin O’Neill left the job following a disastrous UEFA Nations League campaign at least and the Boys in Green come into this game on the back of a five game unbeaten run.
That run doesn’t perhaps tell the full story though. Only two of those three games have yielded victories, narrow 1-0 wins over minnows Georgia and Gibraltar. Home and away draws against a Denmark outfit that seems stronger than them on paper will be pleasing, but with a tough Switzerland outfit also in their group the Green Army will need to kick on, starting with three points as expected here at odds of 1/50 with Unibet.
Gibraltar are one of the newest and smallest teams in UEFA, having only been accepted in 2013 into the confederation. Given the size of the nation, it’s hardly surprising that they have failed to truly compete when it comes to qualifying for the major tournaments over the last few years, but they were one of many teams to benefit from the UEFA Nations League as it pitted similarly-ranked nations against each other.
In this tournament, Team 54 managed to pick up rare victories against both Armenia and Liechtenstein but they did lose their other four fixtures and they’ve started this Euro 2020 qualifying section with back-to-back defeats against the Republic of Ireland and Georgia. With the vast majority of their squad being local, amateur players it’s no surprise that the odds are stacked against them here at 80/1 with PaddyPower.
We’re backing Gibraltar to keep things relatively tight in this game. The Republic of Ireland are clearly a far superior side, but they only managed a one goal victory in the reverse fixture at Victoria Stadium and it’s fair to say that there’s a lack of firepower in their squad. The Boys in Green have managed to score just three goals in their last seven games, so backing them to score more than four here seems a stretch, hence why Gibraltar +4 looks like good value at 6/5 with Bet365. It’s also why we’re backing under 4.5 goals at evens with William Hill.
