Republic of Ireland vs Bulgaria Match Preview
Mick McCarthy’s second spell as Republic of Ireland manager has begun in satisfactory fashion – and he gets the chance to learn more about his players against Bulgaria on Tuesday.
The Republic are in a three-way fight for two places at Euro 2020 from qualifying Group D and are top of the table, having been done a big favour when Georgia held Denmark to a 0-0 draw on Sunday. Switzerland are the other team also very much still in contention.
The bookmakers rate the Irish as the outsiders of the trio to progress, with the campaign resuming next month, but in the meantime McCarthy tries to retain his five-match unbeaten record since he replaced Martin O’Neill last winter.
There are several untried or barely tested players in the squad whom McCarthy can blood here including midfield duo Josh Cullen and Jack Byrne, while one of the two young goalkeepers called up, Kieran O’Hara and Mark Travers, may be given a chance to deputise for first-choice Darren Randolph.
Bulgaria, meanwhile, were drubbed 4-0 by England on Saturday and it is time their manager Krasimir Balakov, who was capped 92 times as a player, started showing he has what it takes to turn around their flagging fortunes after three straight defeats to start his reign.
There was not a huge amount of encouragement for Bulgaria at Wembley and it looks likely they will be beaten again here, albeit not as emphatically on the other side of the Irish Sea.
