Rennes are entering new territory as far as European football is concerned but they are backed to embrace the challenge with a home victory against Real Betis.

The French club are in their 10th continental campaign but have never previously made it past Christmas, including bowing out in the group stage of the Europa League/UEFA Cup three times in the past 14 years.

They have benefited from a lenient pool in which they and Dynamo Kiev progressed at the expense of Astana and Jablonec, but encouragingly for the Rouges et Noirs their current form is pretty good.

Julien Stephan’s side have won four of their last five games, the exception being a predictable defeat away to Paris Saint-Germain, and among their victims were Lille and St Etienne who are both in the top five of the Ligue 1 table.

In contrast, Real Betis on the road recently have been less convincing. They are winless in five away from home and were beaten 3-0 at Leganes on Sunday.

To be fair to Quique Setien’s team, they did qualify comfortably at the top of a tough Europa League group that also contained Olympiakos and AC Milan.

Rennes are unbeaten in nine on their own pitch, however, and although it may not settle the tie before next week’s return leg in Spain, they can put themselves in pole position to break even more new ground in their continental adventures.
