Real Salt Lake vs Portland Timbers Match Preview
Portland Timbers travel to Rio Tinto Stadium for their Play-offs clash at Real Salt Lake looking for their sixth win over the rivals in a row, hoping to make their way to the Conference semi-finals on the back of such a streak – despite seeing a rather troubled streak late in the regular campaign.
Indeed, Timbers only ended a streak of five games without a win as they beat SJ Earthquakes (3-1) on the Decision Day, where they still struggled defensively but goals from Larrys Mabiala, Dairon Asprilla, and Sebastian Blanco proved enough for the all-important points. They have struggled to turn clashes their way and Giovanni Savarese will now be desperate for more of the same as they get Diego Valeri back in the outfit.
Real Salt Lake have been far from their best in a campaign tainted by the Betsy Ross flag controversy and the late wins over Houston Dynamo (2-1) and Vancouver Whitecaps (0-1) boosted them to snatch the 3rd spot in Western Conference – something few fans expected midway through June if we want to put it that way.
Claret and Cobalt now have a striking five-match losing streak against Timbers to end but we feel they’ve been very solid in front of the home fans, which will have them just as motivated to capitalize now. They earned five wins in seven outings at Rio Tinto Stadium and only saw Los Angeles FC (0-2) and LA Galaxy (1-2) snatch points along the way.
We do see them building on such a tally and we’ll go for the home side to make their way into the Conference semi-finals here, backing Real Salt Lake to win at Evens with bet365 – which now feels like the best approach to the fixture.
We do feel we’re in for thrills and although Timbers struggled for consistency, we’ve seen them finding the net over the past couple of weeks. With that in mind, we’re also going for a high-scoring occasion where Over 2.5 Goals FT looks like a banker bet at 4/7 with Paddy Power.
