Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid Match Preview
For the second consecutive summer, a Madrid derby takes place a long way from home – only this time it’s the less prestigious International Champions Cup at stake, not the UEFA Super Cup.
Real and Atletico flew to Tallinn, Estonia last August as respective holders of the Champions League and Europa League and they played out an entertaining contest, drawing 2-2 in 90 minutes before extra-time goals from Saul Niguez and Koke ensured Diego Simeone’s side took home the silverware.
This time, they have headed in the opposite direction, both on American tours as part of the International Champions Cup which only Atletico of the duo can still win – provided they beat their city rivals either in normal time or on penalties, and then get the better of Juventus in 90 minutes when they meet in Stockholm on August 10.
Atletico are in the process of building a new-look team for the forthcoming season and, at the time of writing, had still spent only just over half of the £275million they have accumulated in sales – despite slashing out £108million on young Portuguese striker Joao Felix to replace Antoine Griezmann.
They beat Mexican club Chivas Guadalajara on penalties in Arlington, Texas at the end of a 0-0 draw having won 3-0 against Numancia before flying to the United States.
As for Real, they lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich and then drew 2-2 with Arsenal in a pre-season campaign that has been dominated so far by the Gareth Bale exit saga and a serious injury sustained by Marcos Asensio.
Matches between these Spanish capital city rivals are usually tightly-contested and we see this being another such example, with the draw our idea of the best bet.
