Real Madrid vs Ajax Match Preview

Real Madrid have lost their last three home games, but in the Champions League they are a different animal and thus expected to reach the quarter-finals comfortably against Ajax.

Barcelona twice and Girona have won at the Bernabeu Stadium within the last few weeks to leave Real with only a fourth consecutive European title, and fifth in six years, to target over the remainder of the season.

Achieving that remarkable feat is surely the only way Santiago Solari would still be Los Blancos’ manager next term with a host of potential successors waiting in the wings, e.g. Max Allegri, Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino.

In the first leg of this tie, Ajax were terrific. Their youthful team played some exciting, vibrant football, they were the better side and yet lost 2-1 as Real’s knowhow at this level made the difference with goals from Karim Benzema and Marcos Asensio, either side of an equaliser from the excellent Hakim Ziyech.

Sergio Ramos managed to get himself suspended for this return match – and also his next European game due to the deliberate nature of the booking – but nevertheless Real will know the importance of getting through this test and their experience is backed to tell with a decisive success.
